Bartholomew Hunt, Edwards's foil character, is a fumbling miscreant employed among Edwards' party as a tracker. Along the journey, the wide separation between Hunt and Edwards narrows as Edwards finally loosens up, finding love where he thought he was looking for glory. The fellowship appears to be doomed from the start when the audience is introduced to Edwards' bottom-of-the-barrel frontiersmen. Hopes for Edwards' expedition rise meagerly when the crew is joined by Shaquinna who presumably represents Lewis and Clark's Sacagawea. Shaquinna, a young Native American, is instrumental in the party's mostly safe journey through the west; the "mostly" part imposed by the crew's antics and mishaps. Ironically, Edwards' party beats Lewis and Clark's to the Pacific, yet in the interest of being "Almost Heroes, " the men decide they'd rather carry on exploring than presume they've found it all. Before he died, Chris Farley reportedly told friends he was trying to get away from the "fatty falls down" kind of roles that had made him famous. Too bad he didn't make this resolution before accepting a part in "Almost Heroes, " his sad swan song. This comedy about two explorers who try to beat Lewis and Clark to the West Coast in 1804 features Farley as Bartholomew Hunt, an obese, boozing tracker who, indeed, falls down a lot. Given that Farley was an alcoholic who died after a drug-taking binge, it's hard not to cringe at the movie's attempts to wring happy slapstick from his character's liquor-gulping propensities. The sour notes begin with Hunt's first appearance on screen: He is about to hang for a drunk-and-disorderly arrest and announces to the crowd, "When I'm dead and have passed on to the next world, I want you to lower me from these gallows and kiss my hairy buttocks. " Cheers! Yet watching Farley actually is less painful than enduring Matthew Perry's exaggerated aristocratic mannerisms as Leslie Edwards, Hunt's snooty companion.
Farley at least boasted a real movie presence, and Hunt turns out to be the movie's most competent, sympathetic and three-dimensional character. Conversely, Perry (TV's "Friends, " "Fools Rush In") acts at a pitch more suited for a "Saturday Night Live" sketch--and a lame one at that. His eyes roll and goggle, he sneers as if Limburger were stuffed up his nose, his accent sounds like a bad William F. Buckley impression, and his double takes are so broad they could knock over Farley. "Almost Heroes" was directed by Christopher Guest, and the condescension that marred his last comedy, "Waiting for Guffman, " has come to full bloom. To find characters funny, you have to enjoy their company. Guest and his co-stars knew this when they made the hilarious heavy-metal parody "This Is Spinal Tap"; those ridiculous rockers proved to be as lovable as they were hapless. "Almost Heroes, " in contrast, is populated solely by folks made to laugh at, not with. All in the movie have been encouraged to play up the cartoonish aspects of their characters, and they deliver punch lines like a series of elbows to the rib cage.

I don't want to give too much away but the basic plot is Chris Farley's and Mathew Perry 's character rallies up a group together to beat Louis and Clark from making it across America first. It is funny but not a movie I'd watch with children. That's only because language and certain adult humor. But definitely a movie to check out if your a fan of Chris farley. Must have!!
