Step One: Have your parents make the lousy, poorly-planned decision to yank you and any siblings you might have (in my case, a younger brother) out of school and move you half-way across the country to some podunk town in the middle of nowhere. Your parents tell you that it's "to start fresh" and "make new exciting memories" but really it's because your dad couldn't keep it in his pants with the new secretary at work, and your mom has a deadly combination of pride and rage. It's what keeps your dad's little mishap from unraveling her perfectly good marriage. She'll hold it over your dad, of course, and every second of that car ride across the country will be soaked with passive aggression and travel-size liquor bottles. Step Two: Mourn the loss of your former life. It really does feel like the end of the world. You've left behind all your friends and a life that was just starting to ramp up. You just got your acne under control, your curves are finally starting to come in, and that kid with the dreamy almond eyes finally noticed you in Biology class.

Yes, they all have their moments, but they're fleeting at best. All the actors have given solid performances, even with the limited material. Michael Fassbender gets the raw end of the bargain with Magneto, and yet, Fassbender really sells it. Same goes with James McAvoy, although this is probably the weakest version we've seen of Charles Xavier, and yet James McAvoy, is reliable as always. Sophie Turner has a fair amount of screen-time, and she brings the right amount of pathos to Jean Grey that helps move the film along. The biggest problem in this film is its villain whose motives are pretty run of the mill – destroy this world to rebuild it in their own way. It's neither new nor exciting. Action wise, there are a few fun moments, but nothing memorable, especially with a third act that appears to be quite rushed. What could have been a big surprise twist with a lot more impact is ruined in the trailers thanks to lazy marketing. The weak screenplay and script weigh down the characters with some clunky dialogue.

"It's OK, " coos Maggie Gyllenhaal in this brilliantly modulated psychodrama about broken dreams and conflicted desires. "Kindergarten teachers are allowed to call their students. '' Are they really? Gyllenhaal's Lisa Spinelli, a disenchanted fortysomething Staten Islander, is on the phone to a five-year-old. She thinks he's a new Mozart; a child possessed (in every sense? ) of a preternatural talent "so fragile and so rare" that modern society "does everything to crush''. But is Lisa simply projecting her own aspirations and anxieties on to this young boy? And how far will she go to see her ambitions fulfilled? Based on Nadav Lapid's 2014 Israeli film Haganenet, this second feature by writer-director Sara Colangelo (who made Little Accidents) is a brilliantly understated study of obsession, a perfectly poised portrait of a woman on the verge. As precariously balanced as its anti-heroine, The Kindergarten Teacher walks a tightrope between the intriguing and the unnerving, gesturing gently toward disparate genres (from heartbreaking love story to supernaturally inflected horror) while keeping its feet firmly rooted in everyday life.
