It remains to be seen how fair these experiments really are, and this one in particular is a bit of an emotional grey area. Before, Derren was keen to show the subjects of his mind games just how much potential they really have. You have the potential to rise above and save a plane from falling; your ability to be influenced from those around you have potentially dire consequences. In contrast, this one seems a little like he's testing himself as much as he's testing Phil, to see how far his techniques can go. Sacrifice might not be the most ethically sound, but the stakes as high as you can possibly go, especially when the subject finds himself in a literal life-or-death situation. There's surely only so far his mind tricks can go before the fight-or-flight mentality takes over and Phil realises that he's put himself in dangers way. Or is there? Due to lack of 'sheer dumb luck' – also known as Derren orchestrating the world around him – Phil ends up befriending a biker gang that then falls into trouble with an illegal immigrant.
