El esbirro del dueño de Death Records ofrece entonces a Winslow un jugoso contrato, éste pica el anzuelo y entrega su trabajo para una cantata, con una serie de condiciones que son falsamente aceptadas. Pasados unos meses sin que nadie le llame, Winslow busca a Swan y descubre que está usando sus temas sin permiso; así conoce y se queda prendado de Phoenix ( Jessica Harper, en su primera aparición en la gran pantalla), una de las muchas chicas que acuden a las pruebas de "El paraíso" (esclavas de ese ídolo que aparece entre rojas humaredas). El compositor es expulsado de la casa de Swan y encarcelado con pruebas falsas (en "Sing Sing", para mayor cachondeo); tras una milagrosa fuga, y un desafortunado accidente en la fábrica del sello Death Records mientras huía de la policía, Winslow desaparece y es dado por muerto. Evidentemente no lo está. A través de una portentosa secuencia de suspense marca de la casa, que juega con el plano subjetivo y la pantalla dividida, De Palma nos presenta al fantasma del paraíso con un homenaje a 'Sed de mal' ('Touch of Evil', 1958); más adelante, el mismo personaje protagonizará una desternillante escena que parodia el famoso asesinato de la ducha en 'Psicosis' ('Psycho', 1969), y es que no podía faltar el recuerdo del director al maestro Hitchcock.

As the show quantum-leaps in time, from 1924 to 1931, Winter and company (mostly Howard Korder, who wrote this ep, and Tim Van Patten, who directed it) once again reminds audiences that Boardwalk moves at its own pace – glacial as it may be – moving on with things whether you're caught up or not.
