Nearly isolated in his spooky; palatial home; she develops relationships with several of the other wives and slowly becomes aware of a hideous legacy of punishment toward more willful women. The film has a brittle and dry quality that is deliberate; but also suggestive of Zhang working through various explorations of his own style (which he resolved in his next film; The Story of Qiu Ju).

But don't bother with this version: it's a muddy, fuzzy print with Korean subtitles superimposed OVER the English subtitles underneath thus making them impossible to read. I returned my copy for a refund. Incidentally, I have now discovered there is a version on YouTube which you can stream - a clearer print and readable subtitles. Try that instead. Unfortunately this copy was below the true excellence of such a film. This is the 3rd time that I have bought this movie on Amazon and each edition was flawed. I would have asked for a replacement but I just wanted to watch the film and not have to wait forever for a new order. If you feel generous and giving then a replacement film would be appreciated. It's not that I mind turning on the subtitles but I would like to know if I'm purchasing a film that isnt in my language. The film itself is beautifully shot but fails to deliver in terms of storyline. I'm not sure if this is due to a cultural mismatch as elsewhere it has great reviews but basically it slowly moves through a very obvious plot line of young girl forced into an arranged marriage, finds her self at odds with her husband and the rest of his wives, and slowly goes mad.

Fifty year old Chen has already three wives, each of them living in separate houses within the great castle. The competition between the wives is tough, as their master's attention carries power, status and privilege. Each night Chen must decide with which wife to spend the night and a red lantern is lit in front of the house of his choice. And each wife schemes and plots to make sure it's hers.
The emotional deprivation becomes too much for one of the wives though with disastrous consequences. What is intriguing about this film is the deft and subtle way that the viewer is enveloped into the world of the women and confronted with the same dilemma as the new bride to work out who are friends and enemies. As the story unfolds, the Hitchcock like terror underpinning their discipline becomes apparent but for one of them it is too late. I would strongly urge anyone to see this film - mostly especially if high quality world cinema is of interest to you. It is a shame that the DVD of this wonderful film has been so clumsily produced that it seems pirated but you could always wait for an improved reprint (surely they must do one eventually of such an important item of Chinese cinema) or see the video. It is absolutely engaging and so well done, you quickly forget that you are reading subtitles. The story of a young girl who is sent by her family to be one of many wives to a wealthy man. The third wife dreams of what her life could have been had marriage not ended her opera career. The second wife dreams of what her life could have been had she been able to give the Master a son. And the female servants dream of how wonderful life must be to live as one of the Master's wives. Yimou films the story with an astonishing beauty, giving even a scene of deadly violence (mercifully hidden from the camera) a gorgeous look. Yimou is also very aware of his leading actress's incredible beauty and he coaxes more expressions from Gong Li's face than it would seem one person is capable of making. If you have any hesitations about viewing a subtitled film, put them aside and allow yourself to be taken on one of the most wonderful cinematic journeys you will ever travel.
