The movie has been panned by the (few) critics who even know it exists. The problem with the film — other than the problematic stereotyping of masculinity and relationships — is that it has no ideas of its own. A cercare di tenere insieme ogni cosa è Bobby, il manager (cioè il supervisore) del Magic Castel Hotel dove vivono Moonie e Scooty: un tipo semplice molto credibilmente interpretato da Willem Dafoe (unico nome noto fra gli attori) che non ha dimenticato l'umana decenza anche se deve costantemente fare la voce grossa con madri e figli per arginare le loro malefatte. Sean Baker, il regista indipendente che ha raggiunto la notorietà (almeno all'interno dei circuiti indie) con il precedente Tangerine, affronta la storia di Un sogno chiamato Florida senza pietismi e con una gran dose di allegria, scegliendo il punto di vista dei bambini e mettendo la cinepresa letteralmente alla loro altezza. Scooty, Jancey e soprattutto l'irresistibile Moonie vivono ogni difficoltà come un'occasione per creare scompiglio e farsi due risate, anche se ci sarebbe poco da ridere per alcuni loro atti vandalici.
