Nojoom è stata costretta dalla sua famiglia a sposare un uomo 20 anni più grande di lei nel fiore della sua infanzia, obbligata a ogni sorta di violenza fisica e psicologica. Una pratica tristemente diffusa nello Yemen come in tanti altri Paesi del mondo quella del matrimonio tra una bambina e un adulto, considerata legittima e soddisfacente per la dote derivante. Un'usanza arcaica, figlia di ignoranza e povertà, a cui Nojoom si è opposta rifiutandosi di avere rapporti con l'uomo che l'ha riportata dai genitori, come si fa con un 'elettrodomestico difettoso'. La bambina è riuscita a fuggire dalla sua famiglia, a frequentare la scuola e ad ottenere, la più giovane al mondo, il divorzio. Basato su una storia vera, raccontata nel libro "I am Nujood, age 10 and divorced" di Nojoud Ali e della giornalista Delphine Minoui il film è fortemente autobiografico poiché ripercorre il vissuto della stessa regista, Khadija Al Salami.
