A movie that can be best described as a Lifetime Original Movie from Hell, "The Landlady" starts out with the frumpy and frigid Melanie (Shire) spying on her husband and catching him in the act of what is probably the least sexy sounding sex ever to be captured on film (or audio). Naturally, she takes this as her cue to poison him with canned crabmeat and is soon on her way to a new life as manager of a newly inherited apartment building. Though she finds frustration with the rampant prostitution and indoor smoking taking place in her new building, things get really nutty… best thing about this movie is the tagline Awful, clichéd mess, The Landlady is a film that should have been better than this, but it ended up being a rather silly film with a bunch of decent moments. However in the end the film rips off far better films and this film should have been much better, but it never ended up being a good feature to begin with. The film's problem lies in the fact that it tries to rely on genre clichés makes this film unwatchable, as everything here just doesn't fit, and fails to bring on genuine entertainment value.
Edit Storyline In Sunshine, Nevada, the middle-aged housewife Melanie Leroy sees her husband Ralston Leroy shagging her neighbor and she freaks out. Then she poisons Ralston, who is allergic to seafood, in the dinner. Melanie travels to the California to the apartment building that she has inherited from her aunt and when she meets her tenant Patrick Forman, she believes that he would be a perfect husband for her. She uses her maiden name, Melanie Leroy, and becomes obsessed for him, killing anyone that might interpose between Patrick and her. The way people act in this movie i believe you could make the case it takes place in "The Room" universe. God, it's so bad. There are plot holes big enough to swim through, the characters narrate their every move, and the audience has to basically put their willing suspension of disbelief into overdrive. However, this is fun you can only get from watching Lifetime reject material. Highly recommended for those who enjoy the ridiculous side of cinema. I could tell you I thought this was stupid, but I don't remember much about it. I think there's a death on a bed or something to do with a suit. Again it's been awhile.. Recent reviews Crawlspace (1986) meets Fatal Attraction/Misery, or maybe Hider in the House. Whatever it is, the camp level is far higher than the gore. Popular reviews More Taking its cues from better horror films like "Misery, " "The Landlady" is a small-scale potboiler about an obsessive and murderous woman who runs an apartment complex. Talia Shire slums it up as the title character whose feelings toward one of her tenants start a particular destructive chain of events. The film has very little style and atmosphere, but it is watchable thanks to its cast and curiosity over just how unhinged the landlady might become. While that curiosity will never truly be satisfied, the film provides enough low-level thrills to make the experience vaguely passable. This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth. Well, that's probably the 1st time someone has been poisoned with crab meat. Guilty pleasure status all the way. Love watching Talia Shire play a complete nut.
