Perhaps part of it was the small space. The filmmakers did an excellent job of conveying the feeling of being trapped in that tiny space. While the beginning of the movie felt a bit awkward, it fell into a much smoother rhythm once the brothers entered the cave and the "real" story began. As the rescue effort continued—and it was no small effort with 127 rescuers from multiple agencies—one brave and compassionate rescuer descended into the cave and remained with John until the end of his life. The movie is punctuated with both flashbacks of John's life and scenes that foreshadow both the end of John's life and his family's future without him. At first, the foreshadowing scenes felt a bit confusing, and I have to admit there were a couple things I never quite figured out, but as I continued watching, the pieces fell into place and made more sense. Even knowing how the movie would end, the last scenes with John and his would-be rescuer Aaron felt especially poignant. It is a thoughtful and reflective movie, one that leads the viewer to ponder on their own life and mortality, and think about what sort of legacy you might leave behind.
